Fire Pit Safety
As the 4th of July Approaches which Goes Hand and Hand with Smores and Bonfires…keep these Helpful Tips in Mind For Fire Pit Safety…And Have a Great long weekend from Moynihan Insurance!!
Fire Pit Safety
Whether you’re at your favorite camping spot or in the comfort of your own back yard, owning a fire pit can give you perfect marshmallows all summer long. But you don’t want to be “that guy” in the neighborhood who burns his favorite tree down! Follow these helpful tips… this summer to practice fire safety.
Light ‘Em Up
Who doesn’t love sitting around a fire, roasting marshmallows and sharing stories? Fire pits are a great addition to the back yard on a cool summer night, but they can also be dangerous. 5,000 Americans are injured by back yard fires every year.
Doesn’t matter when I build it, right?
Wrong! Watch out for wind, dry weather, and other perilous conditions. And keep your head up! Are there low tree branches above you? This is a big “no-no”—the last thing you need is for the sparks to catch on nearby trees.
Are your kids addicted to S’mores?
Let’s be honest, who isn’t? But you don’t want them getting too close. A good rule is to establish at least a three-foot “kid-free zone” around grills and fire pits. Teach your kids and their friends to follow this rule… unless you want “s’more” accidents!
Burn, Baby, Burn!
But not just any wood! Avoid soft woods like pine or cedar, which can snap, crackle, and pop. Never burn treated wood like the kind used for fencing or decks – they can leave toxic metals in the ashes and are illegal everywhere.
Now how do I put it out?
Go ahead and hose down the fire until it is completely soaked, then hose it down some more. Let it sit overnight—while you sleep comfortably knowing your backyard is fire-safe—and dispose of the ashes in the morning in a metal container. You’ve had a great evening, but don’t forget to end it safely!

Solar Panels
Considering Solar Panels?…
Check out this Informational Sheet via our facebook before you get started!

Solar Panels
What’s your favorite activity on a warm, sunny day? Maybe it’s going for a run, playing Frisbee, or just sitting outside with a magazine to catch up on the latest gossip on the Kardashians. When you’re enjoying the weather, it’s easy to forget how much energy is coming down from those rays. Solar power is becoming an increasingly popular topic, and you may even be considering having solar panels install on the roof of your home. But there’s one question everyone’s asking: are they covered by my insurance policy?
A panel of your own
When you own the solar panel, you’re responsible for insuring it. Okay, that makes sense, right? But how do you get it insured? There’s no specific insurance product for a solar panel, like there may be for your shed or boat. Instead, you just have to raise your home insurance by the amount that the solar panel is worth. Talk to your independent agent to discuss the ins and outs of insuring your owned solar panel.
At least you can lease
When you lease the solar panel, the leasing company takes responsibility for insuring the solar panels. That’s even easier! But there are some caveats to leasing. For example, if you have a leased solar panel and then try to sell your home, the leasing company may have the right to approve the new buyer. What does this mean? Well, it could potentially block the sale of your home. You better hope the potential buyer has their ducks in a row.
How safe is it?
You may have heard that firefighters won’t go on the roof of a burning building that has solar panels. Here’s the deal: when you turn off the power to the house, the solar panels are still charged with live electricity, which is shocking to say the least. That being said, many fire departments are being trained on dealing with solar panels. Check with your local fire chief to see how they’re being handled in your town.
When it comes to solar panels, it’s important to do your homework before making any decisions. As always, the best place to start is talking to your local, independent agent- a knowledgeable resource you can trust!

Taking Steps to Stay Safe Around Water
With Warmer Weather, Pools Opening, Beach Time and Summer on the Way…
Take Steps to Stay Safe Around Water…And Make Water Safety Your Priority with These Useful Tips by the American Red Cross on our facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/moynihanins/?ref=aymt_homepage_panel
Make Water Safety Your Priority
- Swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards.
- Always swim with a buddy; do not allow anyone to swim alone. Even at a public pool or a lifeguarded beach, use the buddy system!
- Ensure that everyone in the family learns to swim well. Enroll in age-appropriate Red Cross water orientation and Learn-to-Swim courses.
- Never leave a young child unattended near water and do not trust a child’s life to another child; teach children to always ask permission to go near water.
- Have young children or inexperienced swimmers wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets around water, but do not rely on life jackets alone.
- Establish rules for your family and enforce them without fail. For example, set limits based on each person’s ability, do not let anyone play around drains and suction fittings, and do not allow swimmers to hyperventilate before swimming under water or have breath-holding contests.
- Even if you do not plan on swimming, be cautious around natural bodies of water including ocean shoreline, rivers and lakes. Cold temperatures, currents and underwater hazards can make a fall into these bodies of water dangerous.
- If you go boating, wear a life jacket! Most boating fatalities occur from drowning.
- Avoid alcohol use. Alcohol impairs judgment, balance and coordination; affects swimming and diving skills; and reduces the body’s ability to stay warm.
Prevent Unsupervised Access to the Water
- Install and use barriers around your home pool or hot tub. Safety covers and pool alarms should be added as additional layers of protection.
- Ensure that pool barriers enclose the entire pool area, are at least 4-feet high with gates that are self-closing, self-latching and open outward, and away from the pool. The latch should be high enough to be out of a small child’s reach.
- If you have an above-ground or inflatable pool, remove access ladders and secure the safety cover whenever the pool is not in use.
- Remove any structures that provide access to the pool, such as outdoor furniture, climbable trees, decorative walls and playground equipment.
- Keep toys that are not in use away from the pool and out of sight. Toys can attract young children to the pool.
Maintain Constant Supervision
- Actively supervise kids whenever around the water—even if lifeguards are present. Do not just drop your kids off at the public pool or leave them at the beach—designate a responsible adult to supervise.
- Always stay within arm’s reach of young children and avoid distractions when supervising children around water.
Know What to Do in an Emergency. If a child is missing, check the water first. Seconds count in preventing death or disability.
- Know how and when to call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number.
- If you own a home pool or hot tub, have appropriate equipment, such as reaching or throwing equipment, a cell phone, life jackets and a first aid kit.
- Enroll in Red Cross home pool safety, water safety, first aid and CPR/AED courses to learn how to prevent and respond to emergencies.
